Chapter 8

I might've been a little rude at breakfast. And I do regret it, but when I saw I wasn't eating with Dourack, my top priority was to get through the meal as quickly as I could so I could corner him in private and quiz him about his meeting with the Regent yesterday.

He left before I did. I had no clue what his itinerary might be--mine included time for shopping in Risaeng's open markets this morning, lunch with the solarium's architects, and an afternoon dedicated to test drives of the newest solo trams down at the Regent's own course--so I had to find him before he disappeared completely and I spent an entire day surrounded by people who knew more about my potential future than I did. I excused myself with a smile and held my step in check until I was out of sight of the dining room.

I raced for our quarters first, assuming he would want to wash up after the meal. As I passed the library, however, Dourack's voice filtered from inside.

"--wasn't inappropriate, though."

"Oh, no, no, that wasn't it." One of the Soghos twins. I couldn't tell them apart from their voices. Or by their faces, for that matter.

"He's just..." The other one. Great. Dourack was having a meeting about how I'd behaved yesterday. I leaned heavily against the wall and listened, already dreading what I was going to hear. "Well, he doesn't seem very smart."

I scowled. Like they knew smart. I'd bet a thousand nights with Dek neither one of them had figured out what the Regent had done with the solarium.

"I mean, it's not like Vescha's very bright, either." The twins laughed, and I rolled my eyes. Not only did they not know their sister very well, they weren't exactly helping her reputation by supporting the whole dim-witted image. "And she liked him, she did, but--"

"--can you imagine what would happen if they reproduced?" the other one finished. "The Soghos would be a laughing stock."

My anger rose. How dare they disparage me and Vescha like that? I happened to think we'd have great kids, if I'd given it any thought at all. I gritted my teeth. Come on, Dourack. Defend me.

"The Regent favors him," Dourack said. "Are you questioning his judgment?"

"Of course not."

"And yet, you'd rather Tylen not accompany Vescha any longer."

"You're not--"

"Tylen's young, not stupid." Dourack's voice was unyielding. I'd always hated it when he took that tone with me, that know-it-all attitude that drove me crazy, but damn if I didn't like it when he directed it at someone else. "This was his first trip to Risaeng, so I'm sure if he was a little too enthusiastic for your tastes, that's why."

"Dourack--"

"You're welcome to make any choice you wish, of course. But know that I don't agree with your reasons, and I will make sure the Regent is informed of that."

When I heard footsteps approaching the door, I bolted, running in the direction of our quarters. Getting caught eavesdropping would lower me even further in the Soghos' regard and weaken Dourack's defense.
